Southern Tier HealthLink Provides Emergency Healthcare Records at Binghamton Flood Shelters

With thousands of people displaced to emergency shelters during the Flood of 2011, Southern Tier HealthLink (STHL) has been able to help medical providers provide the fastest, most comprehensive care to those with emergency needs.  STHL personnel were at shelters in the Binghamton University Events Center in Vestal and Johnson City High School in Johnson City, NY, working side-by-side with UHS and Lourdes physicians, nurses and pharmacists to give emergency access to patient medical records in the STHL Health Information Exchange (HIE).

STHL records access was most valuable when patients had incomplete medical information.  Emergency providers most frequently accessed medication and allergy information to insure diagnoses made and prescriptions written were consistent with patients' treatment regimens.  In one situation, a diabetic patient could not remember their insulin dosage.  In a separate instance, a complete list of records was furnished to a provider when the patient could not recall all medications and dosages.  STHL furnished the up-to-date records.

STHL could also instantly print out complete patient medical records for onsite providers.  Providers used the records to review existing patient conditions and provide the most comprehensive care possible under the challenging circumstances.  Thanks to the STHL HIE, providers were able to view consolidated records from UHS and Our Lady of Lourdes hospitals and providers, as well as those from other participating providers throughout the Southern Tier region.

"This is a perfect example of the benefit of electronic healthcare records," said Christina Galanis, STHL Executive Director.  "Thanks to the great relationships we have built with UHS, Lourdes and independent providers throughout the Southern Tier, we can provide emergency access to healthcare providers in high need, high stress situations like the flood, and make sure our citizens are given the fastest, most comprehensive care possible."

Southern Tier HealthLink Completes HEAL 5 Grant Requirements!

Southern Tier HealthLink (STHL) recently completed its $7.1 million HEAL 5 grant from the New York State Department of Health.  The grant supported the creation of a sustainable and inclusive Health Information Exchange (HIE) in the Southern Tier.  Over the three year grant period, STHL built an infrastructure that enabled the secure exchange of patient data among multiple Electronic Healthcare Records (EHR) systems across the Southern Tier of New York State. Learn more.

UMH LogoSouthern Tier HealthLink Connects with United Methodist Homes

Southern Tier HealthLink (STHL) has established a bidirectional exchange of records with United Methodist Homes' Broome County skilled nursing facilities. Effective July 12, STHL's Health Information Exchange (HIE) began receiving Admit/Discharge/Transfer and Conditions records for residents of Elizabeth Church Manor and the James G. Johnston Memorial Nursing Home at Hilltop Campus. Effective July 27, STHL also made regional healthcare records available to the providers at United Methodist Homes (UMH).  Additional UMH records will be available to the STHL HIE in the future. Read more.

Medent Users Forum to Meet
Medent Users Form

Participants share best practices at the Medent Users Forum at STHL

STHL will be hosting its second Medent Users Forum on Tuesday, September 27, 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM, in their offices located in the Old Lackawanna Train Station, 45 Lewis Street, Binghamton.  An objective of the Medent Users Forum is to create a collaborative environment where best practices can be shared and users can get the most out of their Medent system.  Participants will gain information to help them get started with their Medent EMR, and will share ideas with other practices and colleagues who are using Medent.  The group will also address and work through the changes and challenges that Meaningful Use has introduced to practice workflows.

This is a follow-up to the session that was held on July 12, which 25 physicians, practitioners, and practice managers attended.  Some participants were currently using Medent for practice management with plans to implement the EMR, and others were already working successfully with the Medent EMR system.  For more information or to register, contact Kirsten Griffin at kgriffin@sthlny.com or (607)644-9150.

STHL Attends Delaware County Fair

Southern Tier HealthLink attended the Delaware County Fair in Walton, NY, on August 16.  Hosted by our partners at UHS Delaware Valley Hospital (DVH), STHL personnel were able to speak with dozens of healthcare consumers about Patient Consent and the new STHL Patient Portal.

Consumers attending the fair came from all over Delaware County, including Walton, Deposit, Sidney, Downsville, and Delhi as well as surrounding counties, and even New York City, New Jersey and Long Island.  Consumers were excited to hear about the progress of the HIE.  By joining STHL's Patient Portal, both local and more remote consumers can create a portable Microsoft HealthLink account, allowing them to have their healthcare records available anywhere at the click of a mouse.

In the next few months, STHL will be supporting the rollout of NextGen software to DVH providers, allowing them to access the HIE directly through their electronic healthcare records system.  Consumers and providers alike will benefit from the more timely access to HIE records.
