At the BMets GameSTHL in the Community

Southern Tier HealthLink staffers are working hard to get the "Power of Yes!" message out to the Southern Tier Community through a variety of seasonal events in our region.  STHL was one of the event sponsors for the annual Levene, Gouldin & Thompson Tennis Challenger in Rec Park in Binghamton.  In addition to our banner prominently posted at the main entry gate, STHL literature was available to all attendees in the ticketing areas.

STHL was also an August 20-22 weekend sponsor of the Southern Tier's local AA professional baseball club, the Binghamton Mets.  In addition to prominent rotating signage on the main scoreboard at NYSEG stadium, STHL staff volunteers greeted attendees as they walked through the main gates with a "The Power of Yes" message and literature handouts for all three games.  Featured is our new display with Emily Pape, STHL Project Coordinator for Privacy and Security.

Breast Cancer Walk

Southern Tier HealthLink staff are joining forces with the American Cancer Society's Making Strides Agains Breast Cancer walk on Sunday, October 3, at Recreation Park in Binghamton.  Look for the "Southern Tier HealthLinkers" under the tent where you will have an opportunity to engage in an educational activity about electronic health records, and talk one-on-one with staff.  Check out our team's webpage at Making Strides Against Breast Cancer!
Broome Chamber BLISTHL Hosts Broome Leadership Institute Alumni Association

Southern Tier HealthLink (STHL) hosted the Summer Leadership Update of the Greater Binghamton Chamber's Broome Leadership Institute (BLI) Alumni Association at our offices in the Lackawanna Train Station on Tuesday morning, August 17.  Christina Galanis, STHL Executive Director, presented STHL's mission and recent accomplishments to the BLI Alumni members in attendance.  Working with the Chamber and other related groups, STHL hopes to get the consumer consent message "Your YES makes it happen" out to the community.
The purpose of the Broome Leadership Institute is to establish a means of communication among its members regarding matters of mutual interest, including current community issues and needs.  The BLI Alumni group acts as an important networking group for community leaders and also provides a conduit to community organizations seeking its members for leadership and volunteer opportunities.

Just Say YesYour "Yes" Makes it Happen

Let STHL tell your group or employees about

"The Power of Yes."

STHL has been working hard to take "Power of Yes" message to the community.  The objective is to help healthcare consumers understand that saying "Yes" to consent means faster, improved diagnoses, full view of medications across all registered providers, easier access to data in an emergency situation and, importantly, reduced costs in the healthcare system.

Of course, healthcare consumers need to review and sign a HIE Consent form to allow their providers to access the system.  Forms are available at many providers and hospitals locally or directly from STHL.

We are prepared to address community groups (see other stories in this issue of OnTrack) and provide literature or speakers to employee groups.  We want to help healthcare consumers learn how the local and eventually statewide and national HIEs will benefit from connected electronic healthcare records.

To discuss how you can help STHL get the word out, please contact John Hayek (jhayek@sthlny.com) at 607.651.9150.

  "What's in It for Me?"

Participating in a health information exchange (HIE) - that is, consenting to have your records accessible to health care providers in the region - offers major benefits to you and your family.  These include:

Improved Treatment:  When you visit any participating providers, all of those providers would have access to the same medical information about you.  If you are travelling and need health care anywhere in the STHLNY region (Southern Tier and Central NY), those doctors will also be able to access your medical history.  In time, even doctors across the country will be able to access your records, which can alleviate some of the delay, complications, and uncertainty that comes with getting sick or being in an accident away from home.

Peace of Mind:  Your doctor may already use electronic records, but another doctor's computer may not be able to read them.  With the HIE, medical information will be stored in one central, secure location (backed up regularly) so all of your doctors and hospitals will have access to the same updated information.  And you won't have to worry about the accuracy and safety of the information or rely on your memory for the details of your medical history.

Viewing Your Own Records:  You will be able to see your own medical records at the touch of a button through a personal healthcare record (PHR) that STHLNY will be offering in the future.  With escalating medical costs, our busier lifestyles, and the importance of assembling all medical information in one place (especially in case of an emergency), the PHR is a critical tool for people who want to manage healthcare for themselves and their family.
