Broome Community College -- Student Clinical

Sue Silvestri, a Senior year student in the Health Information Technology (HIT) program at Broome Community College (BCC) is working alongside Southern Tier HealthLink (STHL) staff to gain knowledge of the day-to-day operations of our community's Health Information Exchange (HIE) and how HIE can improve health care quality, access, and safety while reducing costs.  The BCC Fall clinical program places students for a 10-week period on Fridays at a participating organization.  STHL became a participant in the BCC Student Clinical Affiliation program in Spring 2012.  Sue also holds a Master's Degree in School Psychology from Suny Buffalo. She spent nine years as a School Psychologist with the Vestal School District.

"I enjoy learning about the overall management of health information. I believe having a patient-centered approach impacts the health system in positive ways. The advances in medical technology are tremendous and represent future strides in helping patients along the continuum of services. My experiences at STHL have been fantastic, and I have learned volumes about the complexities of an HIE. STHL is on the forefront of this paradigm shift carving out ways to continually connect the dots."

"In my Quality Improvement class the students were asked what QI measures we observed at our clinical sites.  It was easy for me to respond since already I have realized that in health information exchange there is a constant effort to ensure everything is working as it should.  For example, continual monitoring of system feeds between participating healthcare organizations and STHL, ongoing communication with the many connected vendors and participants, constant surveillance of the enterprise master patient index (EMPI) to help ensure data integrity, and maintenance of the provider registry.  Plus, the staff makes a special effort to eat lunch together every day.  This enhances union and communication amongst the STHL team."

Sue lives in Endwell with her two children.

REMINDER:  October 3rd is the Last Day for EPs to Begin their 90-Day Reporting Period for 2012

Wednesday, October 3rd, is the last day for eligible professionals (EPs) to begin their 90-day reporting period for calendar year (CY) 2012 for the Medicare EHR Incentive Program. For EPs, this means that they must begin their consecutive 90-day reporting period by October 3rd in order to attest to meeting meaningful use and be eligible to receive an incentive payment for CY 2012.

CMS encourages EPs not to miss the opportunity to participate in the Medicare EHR Incentive Program this year. Begin your reporting period by October 3rd to get on the path to payment for CY 2012.

For EPs who have already completed their reporting period, CMS has a number of tools available to help prepare for attestation. EPs can use the CMS Eligible Professional Attestation Worksheet to record their meaningful use measures to have as a reference when attesting for the Medicare EHR Incentive Program in CMS' web-based Registration and Attestation System. The Meaningful Use Attestation Calculator and Attestation User Guide for Eligible Professionals can also help EPs to successfully attest to meeting meaningful use.
